Mossop Status Update: 2010-09-24

Done:

  • Realised that the status bar going away ruins our plans for add-on download progress notification so worked through a backup plan :(
  • Worked through some privacy concerns with the new add-ons manager, turns out we don't need to worry too much :)
  • Shrunk my review queue down to no blockers \m/
  • Prepared patches for more than 20% of the remaining add-ons manager blockers for Firefox 4 \o/

Next:

  • Sort out any required strings for the add-on download progress notifications
  • More patches, less bugs

PreFox is now available for testing

I’ve finally been able to make some early alpha builds of PreFox, which is clearly a rather unoriginal name for Firefox running on the Palm Pre, available for testing. You can read more and find the builds at the release announcement.

This has been a long time coming, made that much longer by Sprint delaying the release of webOS 1.4.5 and of course Firefox 4 blockers eating into my spare time, I’m hopeful that now both builds and the source code are available some people will start to help out with getting it to be a viable alternative to the default webOS browser. Lots of the remaining work is stuff that is really outside my skill-set.

Don’t miss an exciting opportunity to shape the future of Firefox 4!

You might have heard of this web-browser. It’s called Firefox. You may have also heard that a new version is due out soon. As my part in its development I have helped completely reshape the way the add-ons manager looks. The good news is that the large bits of the changes are pretty much done, pretty much all that is left is a bunch of UI tweaks and some small behaviour changes.

This is where you come in. Yes you, the one reading this post. If you have an urge to help out you can look through this list of things we want to get done on the add-ons manager before release, pick one out and go nuts. These are all things that shouldn’t require very much experience working on the add-ons manager or even Firefox in general, though of course some are easier than others. We have some great information about how to get started and also a great community who can help out if you get stuck. So if you’ve ever had a hankering to get involved this would be a great time to dive in.

Once again that list is here: http://bit.ly/duYWdP, give me or Blair a shout if you have questions or don’t know where to get started.
