Update Channel Selector

The extensions listed here are no longer supported, these pages are just maintained for historical reasons!

This extension allows you to change the update channel your application receives updates from. If you don’t understand what this means then read about update channels.

Be warned, this extension will allow you to change to an unstable update source. Unless you know what you’re doing I suggest you don’t use it. If you lose all your data because you accidentally update to an unstable version then don’t come running to me.

Please note that Mozilla do not provide automatic nightly updates for users of localised builds. Until those are provided this extension can only help you switch between the beta and release channels for such builds.

  1. Would it be possible to get updates on LOCALIZED nightlies? The extension seems to be useless if one does not use the English-US FF or TB versions (unless I miss something ;)!

    THank

  2. I agree with “Klint” that would bee nice, you can also create a link from addons.mozilla to this page…

  3. Just installed on FF 2.0.0.13, restarted, then switched to beta channel, restarted again.
I get a ‘There are no new updates available’ when I check for updates.
Isn’t it supposed to update to FF 3.0b4 ?

    Thanks for your help.

  4. There are beta Versions in Firefox 2. You can test the RCs for an updated like FF 2.0.0.13. You won’t get a major update.

  5. Hello,

the Update Channel Selector version 1.0.3 is not compatible with Firefox 3.1b1pre.

  6. not sure if it supports 3.1pre *comm-central* builds of thunderbird (gecko 1.9.2), also called ‘3.next’ builds till they decide if it’s gonna be 3.1, 3.5, 4.0, 10.0 or whatever. Could you add support for them?

I’ve been using Update Channel Selector to stay up to date with 3.0pre beta *mozilla-central* nightlies (gecko 1.9.1):

    or

  7. Okay the update channel program looks cool, but I cannot for the life of me figure out how it works, I have checket all thet links and there are no description as far as I can tell. A little assistance would be nice. 🙂

The reason I want to try this program is because I cant update Firefox and extensions due to a program from TDC that blocks the auto update feature, and I need the program as it is need to use digital signature on a lot of danish official pages. 🙁

  8. I installed the extension, selected the Beta channel but it doesn’t detect any updates…

  9. Unlike previous versions of this, version 1.5 unfortunately stores your selected update channel in your profile. It is therefore no longer possible to share a profile between builds that you want to keep on separate update channels.

  10. Is this release OK for Thunderbird 3 nightlies, or should I stick with 1.0.3?

  11. When going to Help/Check For Updates to change the update channel to beta in Firefox 3.5rc3 (with Update Channel Selector installed), it’ll, for some reason, say that the default channel (i.e. the release channel) is still chosen, even though going to Tools/Options/Advanced/Update reveals the beta channel has been c hosen. It doesn’t change until you restart the browser.

    1. I wanted to switch from Nightly to Beta, but although the GUI-option you described shows “Beta” and even “about:config” shows “beta” for both (app.update.channel and extensions.updatechannel.channel), doing Help/Check for Updates shows “Shiretoko is currently configured to use the nightly update channel” – and I _did_ about three restarts!

      Is this a bug?

      1. **UPDATE**

The update channel does change. The change, though, doesn’t reflect in the GUI until you close the browser, then restart. So, yeah, it’s a bug, but it’s an annoying one.

  12. Thanks. This is a nice extension because without it, it can be a pain to figure out how to properly correct an erroneous update channel or, of course to change to a different channel.

I just noticed that Update Channel Selector 1.5 does not provide the drop down box under Tools > Advanced > Update > Automatically check for updates to: in T-bird 3.0 to select the update channel there. This drop down is available in Firefox up to 3.7a1pre.

On my wish would be to add an Options interface so that users can also have that way to select a different or correct an erroneous update channel.

  13. This extension works on SM2.0.2 if extensions.checkCompatibility turns false. Please update maxVersion for up to date.

  14. Doesn’t work properly on 3.7a. Tells user they don’t have permission to change the source.

  15. I am using Mozilla “Seamonkey” “Nightly Build”, Build identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.3a5pre) Gecko/20100602 SeaMonkey/2.1a2pre , and it won’t install. I see some other extensions recently modified to have “Updated max SeaMonkey version to 2.1a2.” I would greatly appreciate it if you could do the same for the next version of Update Channel Selector, as I found your little addon useful sometimes. Thank you.

  17. Would like to use the Update Channel Selector to change the channel from beta to nightly in Firefox 4 Beta 4 (Mac OS X). Any chance the Update Channel Selector will be updated?

Otherwise, a way to do this manually? Already changed the about:config setting of app.update.channel to nightly to no avail. Should I update app.update.url or the values that get read into it? I.e.: https://aus2.mozilla.org/update/3/%PRODUCT%/%VERSION%/%BUILD_ID%/%BUILD_TARGET%/%LOCALE%/%CHANNEL%/%OS_VERSION%/%DISTRIBUTION%/%DISTRIBUTION_VERSION%/update.xml

  18. Hi, this plugin seems great but I have a problem.

I can change the update channel as it shows as changed in the about box, but it says there is no update when checking for updates.

I am on 10.0.7 esr version, and I assume the release channel will push down v15 but it says no update available.
