Normally what I look for in photos is sharp focus. I want to make out every detail. But as I was editing this photo of a robin perched in a magnolia bush I found the background turning all milky and making it all look dreamlike. So I leaned into it and in the end this might be one of the best photos I’ve ever taken.

Woman splashed by waves

I shot this in Hawaii in the very early days of owning a DSLR. As well as being a great candid shot of a woman by the sea it also taught me valuable lessons about cleaning lenses because my camera got caught in the splash. To my credit I already had a UV filter on the lens so I could just take that off and carry on.
